Juneteenth 2022 - Save the Date: June 15, 2022

Wednesday, June 15, 2022 - 6:00pm

Justin Hansford, the newly elected member of the United Nations’ Permanent Forum for People of African Descent (UNPFPAD or Forum), will host a community meeting inviting grassroots coalitions, community members and civil society to workshop the development of the Forum prior to its official launch.

The United Nations’ Permanent Forum for People of African Descent is a newly established platform. The Forum is set to begin its work in advocating for human rights issues impacting people of African descent internationally. The Forum will also serve as an advisory body to the Human Rights Council. The event date was scheduled to align with the upcoming Freedom Day celebrations for Juneteenth, the national holiday to celebrate the emancipation of descendants of slavery in the United States.

This event will take place at the International Student House Washington DC at 1825 R Street NW. This Dupont Circle non-profit residence for international graduate students was established in the 1930s to provide housing to students of color in a segregated DC and promote diversity and inter-cultural dialogue.

We hope that our coalition members will represent a myriad of social service organizations advocating on issues relevant to people of African descent throughout the diaspora. Discussion topics relevant may include reparations, environmental justice, health disparities, criminal justice reform, and voting rights. The meeting will be an opportunity for the community to use the forum to build solutions and exchange ideas on these important issues.
